My Weekend Stay with Skyport Lodge on Devil Track Lake

IMG_9547

As you all know Grand Marais is my favorite place to visit in Minnesota, however this time we decided to do it a little differently and stay on a lake that wasn’t Lake Superior! It was our first visit to Devil Track Lake staying at Skyport Lodge and all I can say is wow, I already can’t wait to go back!

Located 15 mins outside of town, this long and narrow lake is truly a hidden gem! Drive a bit up the Gunflint Trail then head out on Devil Track Road and you’ll see a sign for Skyport Lodge. Drive a smidge further through the beautiful wildflowers and you’ll come to a little inlet where the main lodge and cabins are settled right along the lake. The name Skyport is after the old Cook County Airport that is still alive today.

Head into the Main office and you’ll find your room key waiting for you on the bulletin board along with some check-in information! (no contact!)  We stayed in the main lodge on the ground level which was perfect. Our room had a little kitchen, separate bedroom, patio, and walked right outside to the backyard making us just steps from the lake! Eric and I already knew we were in for a great weekend because immediately, I was overcome with a sense of relaxation and community.

The lodge room we stayed in was perfect because every morning we woke up and made breakfast on the stove, and slowly eased into the day by walking out to the lake or just sitting on the patio soaking in the fresh air. There is plenty of seating on the lawn, a playground set for the kiddos and two docks you can easily walk out on or even run off and jump into the lake! It is a shallow and warm enough lake so you are able to swim in it during the summertime!

During the morning or afternoon feel free to take out one of the kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards for a zip on the water! All are free and first come first served for lodge or cabin guests. I paddled out one morning in a cheery pink kayak and I was one of the only ones on the lake – so peaceful! We ended the day on their pontoon for sunset – It ended up being a bit cloudy but at the last minute the clouds cleared for a glowy sunset. They have a pontoon, a boat, and jetskis for daily rentals! Pro Tip: Drive a little closer to the edge (but don’t get too close – this lake is shallow!), and spot out some cool cabins on the lake. #goals

Now, you’ve soaked up some sun, floated on the water, and paddled your heart out I’m sure you’re hungry right? Well, you’re in luck because Skyport has an AMAZING restaurant connected to the lodge – Seriously, you will never have to leave this place! Raven Rock Grill is a full restaurant and bar and is now open Wednesdays – Sundays from 3pm-9pm. Inside you’ll see it celebrates the history of the old airport with historic photos adorning the walls. You’ll definitely want to stay in on Friday night for their Fish Fry! I’m not joking when I say it was the best fish fry I’ve ever had in my life. Cory (one of the owners) has been a fishing guide for over 20 years and has perfected the recipe for this fresh-caught herring! Starting in July they have burger nights and live music by the lake on Sundays. What more could you need?

After filling up your stomach with amazing fish, fill up your cup with your drink of choice from the bar and end your evening with a breathtaking sunset followed by fireside chats by the perfectly built bonfire. It really is the perfect summer getaway so I ask you again, seriously, what more do you need? 😉  Not only is Skyport a great place to gather in the summer, but it’s an amazing spot to come in the wintertime too! They have direct access to snowmobile trails and plenty of truck and trailer parking!

BUT if you’re still not 100% convinced, they also have a community room completely stocked with board games (A cabin must), pool table, foosball, and darts. A person of any age will find something fun to do here if it happens to rain! Or if you want to stretch your legs a bit – head into Grand Marais town for a little day of exploring, but first, coffee and dontus, then come back to relaxation at the lodge. If you need some ideas for town make sure to check out my blog all about things to do in Grand Marais here!

I want to thank Cory and Rachelle for their extreme hospitality for the whole weekend and really just commend them on building up such a great resort. They took over only a few years ago and the place is amazing as is. I had the joy of chatting with Rachelle throughout the weekend and could hear the joy and excitement in her voice about how much they care about this place and the amazing plans they have for it! Including a new dock that’s conducive to float planes and creating customizable stay and play package for folks arriving by plane! How cool is that?! Skyport is truly a family-friendly and inclusive resort. All are welcome there and I loved that they really have something for everyone.

I hope you enjoyed reading and gave you a little inspo to head up to Devil Track Lake now!
