A Guide to the Washington Island Lavender Fields

One of the main reasons for my visit to Washington Island was to catch the lavender blooming at Fragrant Isles. I recently came across a YouTube video on Door County and this was one of the highlight places!

The fields were in full bloom and absolutely stunning. If you plan on visiting anytime soon, read on below for everything you need to know before you visit the fields!

If you are visiting Door County and want to visit the island, you will have to take the Washington Island Ferry Line. It leaves roughly every 15-30 minutes starting around 7am until about 6pm then goes every 30-60 minutes. On busy weekends be prepared to WAIT! There is only one road to get on the ferry – no shortcuts. We ended up waiting for about an hour and 15 minutes to get on the ferry to head over. For 2 adults and 1 car, it was $55 round trip! Adults are $14 a piece and automobiles are $27 (more if they are oversized). Some people ride alone and bring their bikes too! (bikes are $5). You can purchase tickets right when you get up to the line as it’s first come first serve!

Washington Island is about a 30-minute ferry ride off the tip of the Door County Penisula. It is 6 miles wide and about 7 miles long. Once you get to the island you can drive down the Main Road and you will see signs for the Lavender Fields. There are actually 2 on the island but we went to the larger one, Fragrant Isle.

Head down airport road and you will know when you arrive. You will see the vibrant purples right from the road. Drive on in and find a parking spot. The entrance to the fields is $5 each. However, if you plan on shopping in the gift shop, shop first! Every $10 gets you one person’s admission. There are several goodies in there from essential oils, DIY books, gardening tips, candles, aromatherapy, and even some sweets!

There is also a Bistro on-site. Make sure to try the lavender lemonade or if you’d like a more adult version they pair it with wine! Or try the lavender frozen rosé – it was perfect for the hot day!

My Experience

Once inside the gates, it was so breathtaking! The array of white and purple flowers complement each other perfectly. It’s like out of a movie scene! You are able to roam freely and take as my photos as you’d like. Just be respectful of the plants and the surrounding area. Also, note there are several bees that are around. The Lavender attracts them but actually, it also mellows them out. If you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you! There are several benches and Adirondack chairs to lounge on during your stay too so you can truly relax!

We ended up spending a couple hours there just relaxing and taking it all in. There is also a U-Pick stand where you are able to cut an pick your own lavender bundle! It’s $12 and there’s a specific area where you can cut and trim. It’s the perfect keepsake of your visit.

The best time to visit is during their peaks season in July and August according to Fragrant Isle. I went the 3rd week in July and it was magical! You can visit the fields in the summer daily from 10am-5pm.
