If you’ve only considered the Florida Panhandle for summer beach trips, let me introduce you to its underrated season: winter. Visiting Destin-Fort Walton Beach in the winter means fewer crowds, easier parking, peaceful beaches, and amazing winter sunsets that makes everything feel a little bit better.
I recently spent a few days visiting the area and exploring places beyond the beach! To be quite honest, we visited during a cold front, but even so, there was lots to do during the cold spell. Plus the beaches were still just as pristine and beautiful as ever!
Here’s my complete guide of what we got up to during the winter season in Destin-Fort Walton!
Catch Sunrise & Sunset on the Beach

I’ve heard of how pristine Destin-Fort Walton’s beaches were, but I truly couldn’t even imagine until I stepped foot on the stunning white sand and crystal blue water. Seriously, even in 30-degree weather, this beach was the true star here!
We conveniently stayed near the beach so it was easy to catch sunrise and sunset whenever we wanted at the beach! The winter sunsets were extra vibrant thanks to the cooler air and I wasn’t mad at it!
Pro Tip: I recommend heading to the Boardwalk or Okaloosa pier area to catch the beach! There’s a large public parking lot and easy access to the beach! Plus, it’s close to the Pier!
Explore Downtown Fort Walton Beach
Downtown Fort Walton Beach is charming, walkable, and perfect for a relaxed morning.
We grabbed coffee at Beach Weekend Coffee which has amazing seasonal drinks – definitely try one with a fun cold foam flavor too! They have a variety of breakfast treats as well. The vibe was fun and funky inside and you can tell it’s a local favorite hangout! From there, definitely wander up and down the street and pop into the stores like Fluid Surf Shop, DeFrance Indoor Flea Market (it’s GIGANTIC and so many good finds in there!), or the Buccaneer Gift Shop.
Explore Turkey Creek Nature Trail (Niceville)

If you’re looking for nature beyond the beach, head to Turkey Creek Nature Trail.
I’m not the biggest beach walker, but I do love a good boardwalk or paved trail and this one was SO awesome. This scenic boardwalk winds over clear spring-fed water surrounded by cypress trees. Since it was winter, it was peaceful and quiet for me and I was able to spot some wildlife along the trail. During warmer weather, you can swim and kayak these waters too with ease as they have little docking stations where you can easily enter in the water – it was so cool!
It’s an easy, family-friendly trail and one of the most underrated outdoor spots near Destin.
Hike Rocky Bayou State Park

If you check out Turkey Creek, I suggest looping around back to Destin and stopping at Rocky Bayou State Park.
I was actually surprised at all this park had to offer! It’s a former WWII gunnery and bombing practice range with beautiful pines (some over 300 years old) and great hiking paths that loop and curve and give you great views of Choctawhatchee Bay! If you were to do one hike, I highly suggest the Rocky Bayou Trail. For one, it’s a stunning yet short and easy loop, it gives great views of the water. Plus, you can actually find remnants of an old concrete test bomb along the trail. You’ll pass through amazing palms, pines, and magnolia trees – seriously, the vegetation is beautiful, especially coming from me, a midwesterner!
I also loved that they had a self-service kayak rental station here too, which would be perfect for my next trip back during the warmer months!
Walk the Island Pier

For a great ocean view, take a stroll along Okaloosa Island Pier.
During our visit, the breeze was crisp, so definitely wear your layers! 🙂 The views were cool and you can see up and down the coast! If you’re interested, you can also rent gear to fish off the pier! They have everything there to get you started, so it’s a great option for kiddos and adults alike.
Walk Henderson Beach State Park
For pristine dunes and less-trafficked shoreline, visit Henderson Beach State Park. While you can access the beaches in many places, I liked visiting here to see the 30-foot white sandy dunes and to wander along the boardwalk to the water!
The white quartz sand is just as stunning in January as it is in July, but it was nice without the crowds during our winter visit! Since it was cooler, we often had the beaches to ourselves too 🙂
Visit the Destin Fishing + History Museum
Destin is known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” and the Destin History & Fishing Museum is a great indoor stop, especially if you have less-than-ideal weather. It rained one day during our visit so this was a perfect option to learn more about the area indoors!
You’ll learn about the area’s fishing roots, see historic boats and antique fishing poles (I loved that part!), and get a deeper appreciation for Destin beyond the beach. The museum has over 100 fish mounts showcasing all the fish in Destin waters, plus you can learn about one of the longest fishing tournaments in the US – the Destin Fishing Rodeo. It was actually really cool and I learned a lot! Definitely utilize the staff on hand – they were so knowledgeable and passionate about the area!
Explore HarborWalk Village

Even in the off-season, HarborWalk Village has that lively waterfront charm. It’s definitely a family-friendly area and you can spend a whole day here! Park and peruse the waterfront views, grab a bite at one of the numerous restaurants, and, weather permitting, you can charter boats right from the docks there! It’s a really cool vibe over there – perfect for any age!
Don’t miss the coffee at Cafe Cafe! It was one of the best lattes I’ve had on our trip!
Where to Eat in Destin–Fort Walton Beach
I have to say winter is the best time to snag reservations and try popular spots without long waits!
Jackacudas Seafood & Sushi – Fresh seafood with a relaxed vibe. Don’t miss their sushi or specialities like the Blackened Red Snapper or roasted Mahi Mahi Piccata. The service was amazing and the food was so fresh!
Acai Bowls + Coffee at Florida Place Food Truck – this open air area is so quaint and cute to start your morning off! It used to be an old car wash that has now been repurposed into a fun little food truck paradise! Definitely grab some coffee and acai bowls here and hang out before explore for the day!
Coffee at Beach Weekend Coffee + Cafe– My top coffee shops in the area! Loved both of the vibes here, the staff were so friendly, and my lattes were great!
Donut Hole Bakery and Cafe – The name should say it all right? The donuts were great BUT the winner here is the key lime pie! Definitely make a stop one morning and get some treats to go!
Shop at Destin Commons
If you want a mix of national brands and local shops, Destin Commons is a great stop. Since we travel full time with no permanent address, we actually love a good mall to stock up or grab a new outfit! We loved the variety of brands here, and we both lucked out with a new outfit!
Where to Stay in Destin–Fort Walton Beach

We stayed at Destin West RV Resort, which gave us easy access to both Destin and Fort Walton Beach. A bonus for us is that we had access to the Island Resort – which had a great beachfront, dining options, and amazing pools! If you’re looking for a great location and hotel – definitely check out the Island!
While this trip wasn’t camping-focused, the location made it incredibly convenient to bounce between beaches, downtown Fort Walton, Niceville trails, and HarborWalk Village.
Pro-Tip: Winter is also a great time to score better lodging rates across the area.
Final Thoughts: Slow Travel on the Emerald Coast
While we didn’t have the best weather, Destin-Fort Walton Beach still impressed us and we would 100% come back to visit again! The white sand beach and crystal clear water were truly unforgettable. I did enjoy the slower, quieter time of the season, and it felt more local, more relaxed, and more intentional in winter.
If you love slower travel, cozy beach walks, state park hikes, local coffee shops, and colorful sunsets, I think winter might just be your perfect season on the Gulf Coast!
