Red Wing Minnesota Travel Guide: Top Things to Do

The Ultimate Red Wing, Minnesota Guide: Best Things to Do, Eat & See

There’s just something about Red Wing, Minnesota that just makes me feel homey! This charming river town along the Mississippi has been a favorite of mine for years. It’s perfect for a little day trip or a stop along a river road adventure – especially in the fall! From iconic boots to scenic bluffs and yummy treats, this is one of my favorite small-town road trips in Minnesota—and it’s only about an hour from the Twin Cities.

If you’re planning a trip to Red Wing, here’s my personal guide of things to do, eat, and see in Red Wing.

Start at the Iconic Red Wing Shoes

A trip to Red Wing isn’t complete without stopping at Red Wing Shoes. This is where the legendary boots were born—and you can tour the flagship store, browse the massive boot wall, and even see the World’s Largest Boot (yes, it’s over 16 feet tall!). Even if you’re not buying boots, it’s a super fun and quirky photo op plus you can learn more about the history of Red Wing Boots too. Pro Tip: check out the basement for killer deals on Red Wings!

Caffeinate at Mandy’s Coffee and Cafe

No day trip is complete without coffee so I stumbled upon Mandy’s and it’s so cute! It’s a local favorite and I can see why! I loved the adjacent patio – it’s so dreamy during summer and fall to relax outside and sip your coffee. They also have a full menu so it’s a great option for breakfast or lunch!

Shop Local Downtown

I love wandering down Main Street and popping into the local shops. My top two?

Grab a Local Beer at Red Wing Brewery

After some shopping, make your way to Red Wing Brewery. They serve up craft beers brewed right in town, along with pizza and casual bites. It’s got that friendly, local feel that is very welcoming! Catch their Pizza of the month too! In the fall they get creative with flavors like Beer Cheese pizza – complete with popcorn garnish!

Hike Barn Bluff for Epic Views

If you want the best view in Red Wing, this is it. Barn Bluff towers over the Mississippi River and has several trail options, from easier routes to a short but steep climb to the top. The view of downtown and the river is absolutely worth the effort. Definitely catch it in the fall for amazing colors but I also love it in the summer time for sunrise! If you have time for one hike – definitely do this one! You can even trek up there in winter, weather permitting.

Morning Treats at Hanisch Bakery

Locals will tell you—Hanisch Bakery is a must. This family-owned bakery serves legendary donuts, fresh pastries, and more. It was actually voted Minnesota’s Best Bakery too! I’m always one of the classic donuts and nothing too frilly and Hanisch hits the spot! They are notorious for leaning into seasonal trends and treats so it’s always fun to pop in throughout the year! Pro tip: Go early, they sell out fast!

Lunch al Fresco: Rooftop at St. James Hotel

The St. James Hotel is a historic Red Wing icon—and the rooftop patio at Scarlet Kitchen + Bar is the perfect lunch spot. Enjoy sandwiches, salads, or a glass of wine while overlooking the river. It’s the perfect mix of cozy and classy. Even if you’re not staying overnight, grab a bite or a drink here—it’s a vibe! They have a create seasonal menu that rates as well so you’ll always have fresh new options!

Stay the Night at the St. James Hotel

If you want a classic Red Wing experience, book a night at the St. James Hotel. Built in 1875, this historic hotel has beautifully decorated rooms, a great location in the heart of downtown, and easy access to all the main attractions.

Bonus: What’s Still on My Red Wing List

Just because I’ve explored a lot of Red Wing doesn’t mean I’m done! Here are a few spots still on my must-do list for next time:

Red Wing is truly a great day trip or weekend getaway, no matter what season it is (except I’m biased and think fall and summer are the best!) There’s a perfect mix of outdoor adventures, local eats, small shops, and Midwest charm. Plus there’s so many great surrounding towns along the river you can add to your route as well! If you’re heading to Red Wing through Hastings, make sure to check out my suggestions here as well!

Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, Red Wing always has something special waiting for you.
