Minnesota Waterfalls – 8+ of the Best MN Waterfalls to Explore
As the snow starts to melt and the ice begins to thaw, one thing I always look forward to is waterfall season in Minnesota! While you can visit these waterfalls in the summer and fall too, you really get the most majestic views from springtime with the mighty rushing waters. Read on for some of the best waterfalls in Minnesota to check out and let me know if I’m missing your favorite one! 🙂
Ramsey Falls – Redwood Falls
If you grew up in the cities, Ramsey Falls might not be too familiar to you, but this was the closest waterfall I had growing up in Southwest Minnesota. Located in the town of Redwood Falls, explore Ramsey Park to catch the waterfall, see their zoo (yes even a little zoo!) or bike or drive the trails around. It really is a beautiful park!
Vermillion Falls – Hastings
Not too far from the cities, catch a spectacular waterfall that’s not visible if you’re just passing through the town! However, Vermillion Falls is easily viewable from the parking lot of Vermillion Falls Park. Hike around or ride the bike paths around the falls then fuel up with coffee at one of my favorite shops – Froth & Cork or cool off at the Hastings Dairy Store with a milkshake!
Minnehaha Falls – Minneapolis
A classic for anyone in the city this is also one of my most recommended spots for out of towners to visit if they are short on time! In the summer, make sure to grab lunch at Sea Salt Eatery too – it really is a great summer spot!
Winnewissa Falls – Pipestone
This little waterfall packs a beautiful punch as it’s nestled right amongst the beautiful red stone you can find at Pipestone National Monument. Head through and walk the ¾ mile loop to see the bluffs, wildlife, quartzite cliff, and red pipestone that has been quarried here for countless generations!
North Shore Waterfalls
The north shore is a hot spot in Minnesota during the waterfall season. Featuring some of the most beautiful ones in Minnesota, Make a day (or weekend) to check out these falls the next time you venture north! Starting in Duluth and all the way to the Canadian border there are over 10 waterfalls you can explore!
North Shore Waterfalls:
Split Rock Falls
Beaver River Falls
Cross River Falls
Temperance River Falls
High Falls – Grand Portage
Travel all the way up the North Shore to stop at the last and final waterfall on this tour. Coming in at 120ft, the High Falls on the Pigeon River is the largest waterfall in Minnesota! Catching a glimpse of this waterfall is easy and accessible to nearly everyone, as the short paved trail will lead you to these breathtaking views. And while you’re there, pop in Canada for a little day trip to Thunder Bay!
Hidden Falls – Nerstrand
Located in Nerstrand State Park, get here early as this popular state park’s parking lot fills fast! There is lots of great camping and trails here. The short hike to the falls is fairly flat with a steep incline towards the falls just beware of that. This small but breathtaking waterfall is the perfect way to cool off for the day too! It’s very shallow making it a perfect wading pool on a hot day. After, enjoy exploring downtown Faribault and go mural hunting!
Minneopa Falls – Mankato
Located in the Minneopa State Park, the Minneopa Falls is one of the most scenic falls in MN (in my opinion!) This state part has a lot to offer too including the bison reserve. It’s a 331-acre prairie preserve that is home to 100+ bison. Catch them from your car on the Bison Viewing drive or via the hiking paths that encircle the reserve too.
Kawishiwi Falls – Ely
When visiting Ely, the Kawishiwi Falls must make your list! It’s an easy 1.5-mile loop that starts at the parking lot (signs will guide you) that is about 5 miles outside of Ely. Shortly after you begin, you’ll hear the rushing falls, which makes you pick up your pace just a little faster and in no time you’ll see all of the 70ft falls in their glory!
While this is just scratching the surface, I think these waterfalls will let you explore Minnesota to the fullest! Now – did I miss your favorite?!
